Gough Brothers Go Head to Head at Walter Hayes Trophy
Stuart and Ian Gough are set to go head to head once again at this years Walter Hayes Trophy at Silverstone on the 3rd-5th November.
The WHT is the UK’s biggest Formula Ford meeting of the year with up to 150 drivers expected to vie for title in front of the British Racing Drivers Club Chairman, Damon Hill. With a series of heats and semi-finals, 34 drivers will then line up for the all important final on Sunday afternoon.
With continued support for the Gough brothers by partners J Miller and Co and Oldfield’s Autos, Stuart will return to the family run Gough Racing team in their Swift SC95, whilst Ian will compete in the Team West-Tec Swift SC92.
Ian will go into the WHT as one of several favourite’s following his success this year driving for the Gough Racing Team in the Club Formula Ford Championship, where he took three victories and seven pole positions, before his season was cut short by a dramatic incident. Ian’s past form at the WHT also adds weight that he will be a front runner from the get go. In 2004 Ian took a podium in his heat and despite the disappointment of retiring in his Semi-final, went onto win the consolation final from Peter and Morgan Dempsey who are also tipped for success this year. 2005, and in the Team West-Tec Swift SC92, Ian took a podium in his heat, 6th in his semi-final, before sliding off into retirement in the final whist battling with eventual winner Nathan Freke.
Stuart will also line up as a possible victor. In a sporadic racing career since his 2004 UK Formula Ford championship program, Stuart has most recently in 2006 won on his guest appearance in the UK Formula Ford Championship and finished on the podium driving for Team West-Tec in his debut in Formula 3. Returning to Formula Ford and the WHT in the family team, Stuart will be aiming to build upon his past form at the event. 2004 saw Stuart win his semi-final, before recovering from a clash with British F3 winner Danny Watts to finish third in the final. Last year Stuart drove the Swift SC95 and despite an engine failure and a huge accident in his semi-final, miraculously recovered from 23rd on the gird for the final to finish sixth by the flag.
To see the brothers battling for overall victory and to be the first Gough across the line advance tickets are available from the BRDC at www.brdc.co.uk, or you can catch highlights of the event on Sky Sports later on in the year.
